**Start here**If you are getting very few matches on Tinder, changing how often you swipe is probably not the first thing to fix. Start with a clear first photo, add enough variety to show what you actually look like and do, write a bio that gives someone an easy reason to respond, and use the app regularly. Tinder itself says regular activity is the most important factor users can directly control in its recommendation system.

There is no hidden setting that suddenly makes a profile attractive to more women. Tinder's current explanation of its matching system is much less mysterious than many “algorithm hacks” make it sound.

The app wants to show active people to other active people. It also considers distance, information you add to your profile, interests and some patterns in the photos people respond to. That means the most useful changes are also the obvious ones: make the profile stronger, keep it current and give matches something worth talking about.

## Start with the first photo

Your first picture has one job: make it immediately obvious who you are.

Tinder's own profile guidance recommends a clear, current photo where your face is visible. That means avoiding a group picture as the opener, heavy sunglasses, an old blurry photo or anything that forces someone to figure out which person in the image owns the profile.

A polished studio portrait is not required. A normal, well-lit photo where you look like yourself is more useful than something impressive but ambiguous.

**A stronger first photo**
- shows your face clearly;
- is recent and in focus;
- has simple lighting;
- looks natural rather than heavily edited;
- does not make someone search for you in a group.

**Usually weaker choices**
- five nearly identical selfies;
- a distant full-body shot as photo one;
- filters that change your appearance;
- photos where your face is covered;
- pictures that are several years old.

## Your other photos should answer a different question

Once someone knows what you look like, repeating the same selfie four more times does not tell them much.

This is one area where Tinder's newer Photo Tips feature is revealing. In supported markets, it looks at the profile as a complete set and may suggest adding variety — for example, replacing repeated selfies with a hobby or activity photo. Tinder says photos showing different activities, settings and poses give people a fuller sense of who you are.

### One clear portrait

Make recognition easy. This is usually the best candidate for the first position.

### One full-body photo

Use a normal setting rather than turning it into an overly posed photo shoot.

### Something you actually do

Cooking, hiking, music, sports or another real interest can create an obvious conversation starter.

### A social photo, if it adds something

A group shot can show context, but it works better after people already know which person is you.

You do not need to manufacture an adventurous life for Tinder. A believable profile is more useful than six pictures designed only to look impressive.

## Give someone an easy way to start a conversation

A bio does not need to be long. It needs to contain something another person can react to.

“Ask me anything” gives a match all the work. A couple of concrete details are much easier to use: what you do on weekends, the food you are always looking for, a hobby you actually spend time on or the type of date you enjoy.

Tinder's current FAQ makes essentially the same point: mention things you are into, what you are looking for or a reference that feels like you rather than trying to write what you think everybody wants to hear.

**Specific beats impressive**“I spend Sunday mornings looking for the best Cuban coffee in Miami” gives someone more to work with than “I love traveling, music and having fun.”

## Use Interests, but choose ones that say something

Tinder lets profiles add Interests, and the feature exists partly to help potential matches find common ground and start conversations.

Do not treat them like SEO tags. Pick things that genuinely represent you. If three Interests say almost the same thing, they are not adding much.

Tinder currently requires at least three Interests when adding them, and availability can differ by location. Their order also follows the order in which you select them, so put the ones that say the most about you first.

## What Tinder actually says about getting more matches

This is where a lot of online advice becomes more complicated than the product itself.

In its September 2026 explanation of the recommendation system, Tinder says the biggest factor users can control is simply **using the app**. It prioritizes potential matches who are active, particularly people active around the same time.

That does not mean sitting on Tinder all day or swiping right on everybody. It means an abandoned profile is unlikely to perform like an account that is actually being used.

The same explanation says recommendations can also consider:

### Distance

Proximity remains a major factor because Tinder is designed around showing people who are realistically near one another.

### Your profile information

Interests and lifestyle details can help the system identify people with things in common.

### Photo patterns

Tinder says anonymized photo cues can contribute to recommendations based on the kinds of profiles people have previously Liked.

Importantly, Tinder also says it no longer relies on the old Elo-style score that is still mentioned in many outdated guides.

## Do not make your Discovery settings impossible

A strong profile cannot create people who fall outside the preferences you have set.

If your age range is extremely narrow and your distance limit covers only a small area, the pool will naturally be smaller. That may be exactly what you want — and there is nothing wrong with being selective — but it is worth checking those settings before assuming your profile has stopped being shown.

The goal is not to widen every preference just to collect matches. Set a range that reflects who you would genuinely be willing to meet.

## Verification can remove one small question mark

Tinder's Photo Verification uses a short video selfie and facial-recognition technology to compare the person in the video with their profile photos. A successful check adds a verification badge.

That can give potential matches an extra signal that the person resembles the photos they uploaded. It is not a guarantee that everything on a profile is true, and Tinder explicitly warns users not to treat it that way.

In some test markets, Tinder also offers ID + Photo Verification. Availability is not universal, so do not expect every account to have the same option.

## A match is only useful if the conversation goes somewhere

Getting more matches and getting better conversations are not the same problem.

Once you match, look at the profile again before sending anything. A message tied to a photo, Interest or bio detail immediately feels less interchangeable than “hey” or a copied pickup line.

You do not need to perform. Ask about something you are genuinely curious about, then pay attention to whether the conversation is reciprocal.

**Example**If her profile mentions trying every taco place in Miami, “Which one is actually worth the drive?” creates a real conversation more easily than a generic compliment.

## Do not rush to get her number

A good conversation does not need to leave Tinder immediately.

Tinder's own safety guidance recommends chatting in the app while getting to know someone and sharing a phone number, social account or other personal information only when it feels appropriate.

If the conversation is going well, moving elsewhere can happen naturally. If somebody prefers to stay in the app longer, that is not a problem to solve.

## What to change first if you are getting almost no matches

Do not change everything at once. That makes it impossible to tell whether the profile actually became better.

### Replace the weakest first photo

Start with a clear current image where your face is easy to recognize.

### Add variety

If most of your photos look alike, swap one for an activity or hobby shot.

### Rewrite the bio in concrete language

Give a potential match one or two specific details she can actually respond to.

### Check Interests and Discovery preferences

Make sure your profile says something real and that your distance and age settings match who you would actually date.

### Use the account regularly

Tinder explicitly identifies activity as the most important recommendation factor under the user's direct control.

## Frequently asked questions

Does being active on Tinder help you get more matches?

Tinder says regular activity is the most important factor users can directly control in its recommendation system. The app prioritizes potential matches who are active, including people using Tinder around the same time.

What should my first Tinder photo look like?

Use a recent, clear photo where your face is easy to see. Tinder specifically recommends avoiding blurry pictures, group photos that make your identity unclear and images where sunglasses hide much of your face.

Does Tinder Photo Verification guarantee a profile is real?

No. Photo Verification can indicate that someone's appearance matches the photos submitted to Tinder, but Tinder says the badge does not guarantee that every claim or piece of information on the profile is authentic.
